It was found Monday that North Korea demanded a Chinese firm where North Korean workers were dispatched to remit the workers' six-month salary in advance. Alienated internationally due to its nuclear development, North Korea is having difficulty in preparing funds for the Workers' Party convention due early next month, and thus is urging a pre-payment of salary. North Korea is indeed suffering from lack of foreign money.

"Recently, a fisheries firm in Dandong, China, where about 200 North Koreans are working at, sent to North Korea salary worth six months because of the North's strong request," Daily NK said by quoting a North Korea source in China. "This seems to be an effort to obtain money for the Workers' Party convention due early May. This source told Daily NK, "Among 500 dollars (per worker), most of it was sent to North Korea, while the remaining 150 dollars was paid by a North Korean in charge. But even this is not guaranteed."

"As restaurants operating overseas, which had been a good money channel, are not living up to expectations, North Korea is trying to force their people working overseas," Daily NK said. "Last month, two North Korean construction workers escaped to police station in Doha, Qatar, saying that they couldn't endure exploitation."
