In an editorial on Sunday, the Global Times, the sister paper of the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily, said, “A strategic resolution is being established in China, which is to fight the Trump administration's trade aggression in the same way the country fought U.S. troops during the Korean War (1950-53). We should fight today's trade war with the same strategic spirit that fears no sacrifice or loss, and force the United States to burn the very stick that it wields at China.”

“China's participation in the Korea War was due to U.S. military's approach to the Yalu River, which is the Chinese border. Today's trade war is also due to U..S acts that are hurting China's core interests,” the newspaper added. “A sense of crisis that we have no place to retreat is uniting the Chinese society. We know there will be sacrifices but we understand better that there is no limit to the greed of hegemony. China has enough ammunition to fight this trade war.”

The U.S. ninth aircraft carrier battalion combat team, which is headed by the flagship USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and comprised of the guide-missile destroyer USS Halsey (DDG 97), and the cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), has been conducting a joint military drill with the Singaporean navy in southern waters of the South China Sea since Friday.

The Liaoning, the only Chinese aircraft carrier that has been put to combat mission, is conducting a large-scale military exercise with more than 40 battleships and submarines, and 12 H-6K strategic bombers in Hainan waters in the South China Sea from Thursday. Watchers raise concern that if the USS Theodore conducts “freedom of navigation” operations by approaching waters that China claims sovereignty, U.S. and Chinese aircraft carriers could get into their first ever standoff.
