LG to unveil V30 at IFA in Berlin on Aug. 31

The V30, LG Electronics’ premium smartphone for the latter half of the year will be unveiled at the end of next month. The place for showcasing will be the IFA 2017 trade show, the largest exhibition of home appliances in Europe to be held in Berlin, Germany.

The South Korean smartphone maker sent out “Save-the-Date” invitations all around the world on Thursday. The unveiling ceremony of the V30 will take place on August 31.

The V series’ launching time is being slightly advanced every year. The V10 was rolled out on October 1, 2015, and the V20 came out on September 7, 2016. This time, LG showcased its premium smartphone a week earlier than last year, reducing the time gap with the unpacking of Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note 8. Having disclosed the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2 last year, this time Samsung is planning on holding an unpacking event in New York for the new Galaxy Note model in August, three weeks later compared to the previous year. In other words, the time gap between the two companies’ unpacking ceremonies has shrunk from a month to eight days. “Once the new products from the other company (Note series) are disclosed, it can hog all the attention in the smartphone market,” explained an official from LG Electronics. "Our strategy is focused on dispersing the attention and securing potential buyers in the wait list."

Another difference is that the company has chosen the IFA as its new venue instead of holding a separate unpacking event. The intention behind such a move is to attract more consumers in the European market, going beyond South Korea and North America, a central market for large-sized smartphones. The V30 boasts a bigger screen compared to its predecessors. Industry experts are expecting that LG’s latest smartphone will feature a 6.0-inch full vision display with an 18 to 9 screen ratio, a decision to cater to the growing preference for a large-sized screen. The previous models of the V series all adopted a 5.7-inch screen. Despite the enlarged screen, the actual size of the phone has not changed significantly thanks to the minimized bezel design. “The screen got bigger, but the actual phone size is moderate, so we are expecting the new smartphone will be in demand even among Europeans who do not like large-sized smartphones in general,” said an official from LG.

The new V30 is equipped with a dual camera on the back and an embedded battery system. The phone also boasts the IP68 level dust-and water-resistance, which is the highest grade.
