Samsung Electronics will hold an event to launch the new flagship Galaxy Note 8 smartphone in New York, the U.S. in August. The move is aimed at gaining the upper hand in competition this fall with the 10th anniversary iPhone from Apple.

According to sources in the electronics industry on Monday, Samsung Electronics will hold its New York unpack event for the Galaxy Note 8, which succeeds the Galaxy Note 7 that was prematurely withdrawn from the market last year. The event will mostly likely happen in the fourth week of August. A new model of the Galaxy Note series has made its debut in New York in August every year since 2015, but watchers have suggested the possibility that this year Samsung may unpack the latest model at IFA, the electronics exhibition that takes place in Berlin, Germany in September, due to the delayed launch of the Galaxy S8.

However, since the safety issue that caused the premature exit of the Galaxy Note 7 has been completely addressed through the success of the Galaxy S8, and Samsung’s archrival Apple is projected to launch its 10th anniversary iPhone in September, Samsung apparently has judged that there is no reason to postpone the launch schedule. According to sources in the electronics industry, the Galaxy S8 will come with dual cameras for the first time among Samsung’s premium phones, and will inherit distinctive features that were first introduced through the Galaxy S8, including Bixby and edge-to-edge Infinity display.

The Galaxy Note 8 will be launched one to two weeks later than its predecessors the Galaxy Note 7 (August 2) and the Galaxy Note 5 (August 13), but Samsung aims to reduce the gap in launch schedules that are perceived by consumers. The electronics giant started taking preorders for the Galaxy S8 only a day after introducing the product in the U.S.
