Samsung SDI has provided California in the U.S. with the battery of largest capacity for energy storage system (ESS).

Having taken part in the project to build power supply system in the state, Samsung SDI has supplied 240MWh battery for ESS. Enough to provide power to some 40,000 U.S. households for four hours, the capacity of 240MWH is the largest in the contract size that has been placed so far. The capacity is nearly the half the size of ESS power market in the U.S. last year (590MWh).

Instead of using additional gas generators, the U.S. authorities plan to store surplus power into ESS and use it during summer and winter when power demand surges. The use of ESS brings down carbon emission.

“This is the telling sign that the competitiveness of Samsung SDI has been globally recognized," Samsung SDI President Cho Nam-seong said. "It would greatly contribute to stable supply of power to the entire state of California.” Having applied technologies such as electric vehicle batteries, which have been chosen by global car makers to ESS, Samsung SDI has enjoyed increased confidence in the global market.
