Samsung Electronics has successfully widened the gap between the company and Toshiba, the world’s second largest NAND flash chip manufacturer, in the third quarter of this year by 16.8 percentage points. Unlike DRAM, the NAND flash can store data without power and operates primarily as main memory in smart phones, mobile devices, and solid-state drive (SSD), the next-gen mass storage device.

DRAMeXchange, a global market research company, reported on Friday that Samsung recorded 3.74 billion dollars in sales, accounting for 36.6 percent of the market share in the third quarter of this year. Over the same period, Toshiba took a share of 19.8 percent with 2.026 billion dollars. With the increasing demand of global semi-conductor market, the gap between the companies has narrowed by 16.2 percentage points in the second quarter and by 16.8 percentage points in the third quarter. Previously, the gap was narrowed by 10 percentage points in the first quarter.

In the meantime, SK Hynix was ranked the fourth, accounting for 10.4 percent of market share with 1.06 billion dollars in sales, followed by Micron Technology of the U.S. (9.8 percent).
