The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave a 136 MPGe number to the Ioniq Electric on Saturday local time. Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe) is used by the EPA to compare energy costs for plug-in vehicles (fuel consumption of electric vehicles) to fuel costs for conventional vehicles, and 136MPGe means that the vehicle can run 136 miles with a charge of battery at the cost of a gallon of gasoline.
The MPGe of the Ioniq was higher than BMW i3's 124MPGe, GM Chevrolet Volt EV's 119MPGe and Spark EV's 119MPGe, Volkswagen e-Golf's 116MPGe, and Tesla Model S 60D's 104MPGe.
Unlike "miles on a single charge" that extends as the number of batteries with large capacity increases, the MPGe is an economic indicator that considers the cost of charge. The EPA estimated the yearly fuel cost of the Ioniq Electric at 500 dollars, the lowest among other competing vehicles.
