After halting production of its recalled Galaxy Note7 smartphones, Samsung Electronics has banned sales and exchanges of all Note products.

The Korea Agency for Technology and Standards under the Trade, Industry and Energy Ministry asked Samsung to stop selling or exchanging the Note7 after the regulator told domestic consumers that it confirmed possible defects in the new phones.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has taken in the device that emitted smoke in a U.S. passenger plane, will announce its investigation results as early as Wednesday (Korean time). The CPSC said it was a "right move" for Samsung to suspend the sales and exchanges of all Galaxy Note7 products, and told consumers to turn off all Note7 phones and stop using them while investigation is underway.

With production, sales and use of the device suspended, Samsung is known to be considering killing off the Galaxy Note7 phone. Consumers using the phone may have to visit retail stores for a refund or switch to an alternative phone. Samsung said it will announce follow-up measures as soon as possible.

On Tuesday, shares in Samsung Electronics plunged by 8.04 percent to 1,545,000 won.
