Samsung Electronics has issued a global statement on Saturday, urging consumers to turn off their Galaxy Note7 smartphone and exchange it to a new one. For consumers in Korea, it has decided to rent a mobile phone to consumers at mobile phone retailers as well as its service centers, which is a stronger measure than its initial recall announcement. This came in response to the advice by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that officially advised not to use the Galaxy Note7.

“There have been no additional glitches or problems discovered since the recall on Sept. 2," a senior staff of Samsung Electronics said on Sunday. "We issued an announcement to urge consumers not to use them to prevent any controversy over reverse discrimination in other regions in response to the stronger measures taken by the U.S. government.”

Initially, Samsung allowed consumers to swap some 1.4 million Galaxy Note7 by March next year. However, after a series of fire accidents that were reportedly home and abroad, the smartphone maker issued a statement urging consumers to replace them as soon as possible.

Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Saturday advised consumers to turn off their Galaxy Note7 and not charge it on board aircraft. It also banned passengers from packing the phones in the checked-in luggage. If a passenger insists on using the Galaxy Note7, the airliner can refuse to take the passenger or ban the use inflight under the Aviation Act.

After the FAA’s announcement, major airliners including Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airways, and China Airlines prohibited the use of Galaxy Note7s inflight. The European Aviation Safety Agency, Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Transport Canada, and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation also advised airliners to avoid using the smartphones on board the plane.
