Lotte Confectionery, a key food unit of South Korean retail giant Lotte Group, has donated 10 billion won (9.05 million U.S. dollars) worth of its products to the poor in the first half of the year, the company said on Friday. Since January 2013, South Korea's leading snack maker has donated its products to various organizations under the slogan “Sweet Sharing, Warm World.”

Lotte Confectionery delivered 210,000 boxes of Xylitol Gum, chocolates, biscuits, snacks, and candies on 106 occasions. The total price of those products is 10.7 billion won (9.69 million dollars). Beneficiaries include some 50 organizations, including Save the Children, Korea Association of the Welfare Institutes for the Disabled, the Korean Salvation Army, and Community Chest of Korea, military bases, and Korea Food for the Hungry International.

“Xylitol Gum and Pepero have become really popular and their annual sales went up to 100 billion won (90.5 million dollars)," Lotte Confectionery noted. "We wanted to use some of the profit for the poor.”

The company has been running other social welfare projects such as establishing community child center "Lotte Confectionary Sweet Home" with income from Pepero sales.
