“If YouTube continues to go down, babies will refuse to eat.”

When YouTube service went down temporarily Wednesday morning, it caused uproar. Users complained of classroom and music disruption. The South Korean presidential office Cheong Wa Dae had to make shift using "Facebook Live" for its public communication channel.

The YouTube system error persisted for about one hour starting from 10:30 a.m. As users complained, YouTube posted a Twitter message: “Thanks for your reports about YouTube, YouTube TV and YouTube Music access issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Users responded with various reactions to the problem. “I was perplexed to find YouTube service down, because I do various work via YouTube,” said Mr. Han, a 44 year-old office worker. "It was an opportunity to reflect on how much we depend on YouTube."

Internet users posted various comments about the inconvenience. “I can’t believe this is happening when my subscribers have just started to grow,” said a YouTuber. A parent of an elementary school student said that he hoped the service disruption would persist for a couple of months, because he was concerned about his child’s addiction to the broadcasting service.

The YouTube outage occurred not only in Korea but also in the U.S., Japan and other regions around the world. In the U.S., the service disruption happened during the U.S. baseball championship series, causing viewer uproar. A report was received even through 911, the emergency number.

The industry estimates that a server error or a sudden concentration of user activity has caused the disruption, as 500 error and 503 error messages were shown.
