SK Telecom’s artificial intelligence center "T-Brain" has won the runner-up prize at the VizWiz Grand Challenge 2018 hosted by the European Conference on Computer Vision.

In the contest, participants competed in object recognition capability of their AI technology. Participants were asked questions about more than 8,000 photos taken with the smartphone by more than 10,000 people with vision disabilities, and were eval‎uated based on how proper answers they provided.

The photos included a number of off-focus images and images of blurry light, and required a level of recognition capability that is much higher than that for clear images.

SK Telecom’s T-Brain participated in the contest jointly with Seoul National University’s research team led by Professor Jang Byeong-tak. A research paper on the algorithm used in the technology will be presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS), the most prestigious academic conference in the AI field that will take place in Montreal, Canada in December.
