Samsung unveils faster mobile processor for Galaxy S9

Samsung Electronics Co. on Thursday unveiled its new Exynos 9 Series 9810 processor, a high-performance mobile application processor (AP) that will likely be used as the “brain” of its upcoming Galaxy S9 smartphone.

South Korea's No. 1 chipmaker said that it will begin the mass production of the Exynos 9 featuring an integrated modem and enhanced artificial-intelligence (AI). The AP is expected to enable devices to download or upload content and sort files faster compared to the previous solution, helping users find photos quickly.

First of all, the Exynos 9 processor’s faster telecommunication speed will likely provide greater convenience for consumers, as it comes with Samsung's own 6CA-based modem, boasting the industry's top download speed of 1.2Gbps. CA refers to a technology for the transmission of broadband data by binding two or more frequency bands into one, realizing a download speed of 1.2Gbps. The speed allows devices to download a 1.5-GB film in 10 seconds.

A Samsung official said that the 6CA modem will increase devices’ upload and download speed by about 20 percent, making it more convenient to perform live broadcast on social networking sites or stream online content on a real-time basis.

The chip is also optimized for performing intelligence functions based on deep-learning, featuring enhanced image processing that would enable devices to sort out saved photos in a faster and more accurate manner. As Samsung has been expanding the AI platform “Bixby” on its smartphone models, the chip will likely enhance Bixby’s data processing speed and accuracy.

As the AI functions of smartphones are becoming increasingly important, the competition in the AP market is expected to get fiercer. China’s Huawei drew the industry’s attention by mounting its self-developed AP, the Kirin 970, on its upcoming Mate 10 smartphone. The chipset includes a neural processing unit for the first time among smartphone APs.
