French luxury conglomerates have announced a joint charter that they would ban super skinny models.

LVMH and Kering banned models with a U.S. size zero (a French size 32, which typically equates to a Korean size XXS). The firms will require models to submit a doctor’s certificate proving they are healthy and will not use models under 16 for adult clothes.

Kering and LVMH have decided to allow models to be given a psychologist or therapist while at work and form a committee that monitor whether the charter is properly applied. Dior, Kenzo, Stella, McCartney, Yves Saint Laurent, and Marc Jacobs owned by the two French firms will apply this charter from the Paris Fashion Week this month.

As the fashion industry in France prefers super skinny models, there has been criticism that they encourage an unhealthy body image and gives a wrong signal to young people that eating is not good.

The French government prepared in May this year a bill that bans super skinny models and sentences fines (up to 75,000 euros) to agencies, brands and fashion houses or give them a six-month prison term. The law will become effective from October 1.
