As presidential candidates near their registration for the candidacy on Saturday, the polls conducted by Gallop Korea on Friday suggested that Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party and Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party were running a neck-and-neck race at the first and second positions, within the margin of error since last week.

According to a Gallop Korea poll on major five contenders ran between Tuesday and Thursday, Moon (40 percent) and Ahn (37 percent) maintained the 3 percentage-point gap, which is the same as last week. However, it was found that supporters of the two candidates are continuing to rally, as each of them has earned 2 percentage points since the last week’s poll.

Hong Joon-pyo of the Liberty Korea Party stood at 7 percent, while Yoo Seung-min of the Bareun Party and Sim Sang-jung of the Justice Party both earned 3 percent. Compared to the last week’s survey, Hong and Sim maintained their support, while Yoo lost 1 percentage point.

Supporters of Moon and Ahn greatly differed when it came to age groups. While Moon was strongly supported by the 30s (65 percent) and 40s (56 percent), Ahn was not an appealing candidate to the same age bracket with 22 percent and 29 percent, respectively. Still, Ahn enjoyed stronger push from the 50s (51 percent) and those aged 60 and older (53 percent), than Moon (29 percent and 11 percent, respectively).

When broken down into regions, Moon (47 percent) and Ahn (36 percent) each saw decrease of 5 percentage points and 2 percentage points at Honam area from last week. Both presidential candidates enjoyed increase of 10 percentage points in Daegu and North Gyeongsang areas, while Ahn (48 percent) greatly surpassed Moon (25 percent).
