According to the People's Party on Monday, such personnel choice is being pushed for by the Donggyo-dong faction such as standing advisor Kwon Roh-kap. "The post requires a heavyweight figure, given its power to control the party convention," said an official from the Donggyo-dong faction. "A two-time chief campaigner, Chung will be a legitimate choice for the opposition party as well."
Some suggest that there may have been some contact between Park and the members of the Donggyo-dong faction. However, Park refused to give a clear answer. It has been reported that during a closed committee meeting on Friday, Park announced his will to hand over his post to a replacement on Oct. 9.
Park's tenure in office will end in December, when the party convention will be held. As some lawmakers from the opposition party are voicing the need to present a new man, friction is expected in the personnel change.
