U.S. President Donald Trump revealed on Monday (local time) that he is looking forward to meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. This was a response to Kim Jong Un’s remark through his New Year’s speech that he is ready to meet President Trump.

“Kim Jong Un says North Korea will not make or test nuclear weapons, or give them to other - & he is ready to meet President Trump anytime,” Trump tweeted, citing a PBS News Hour report on Kim's New Year's address. “I also look forward to meeting with Chairman Kim who realizes so well that North Korea possesses great economic potential!”

President Trump did not express any remarks- on Kim's warning that North Korea “has no choice but to seek a ‘new path’ if the United States misjudges North Korea’s patience,” requesting corresponding measures such as alleviation of U.S.-led sanctions against the North.

Officials of the U.S. Department of State, who have engaged in denuclearization negotiations with North Korea, appear to be taking the young North Korean leader’s speech rather cautiously. Previously, when requested by media to make a comment on Kim's New Year’s speech ahead of President Trump’s remarks on Twitter, the U.S. Department of State replied shortly by saying that it declines the opportunity to make a comment.
