LG Electronics Vice Chairman Jo Seong-jin said the company will increase the sales of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) TV by more than twice from last year. This is part of the company’s plan to secure a higher share in the premium TV market by increasing the portion of 55-inch-or-larger OLED TVs.

During a press conference at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas Wednesday (local time), the vice chairman said, “We will increase the portion of extra-large-sized OLED TV, such as 65-inch and 77-inch TVs, starting from this year.”

The general TV market is currently saturated. Therefore, home appliance makers see the extra-large-sized TV and AI TV markets as blue oceans and concentrating on them. At this year’s CES, LG Electronics introduced new televisions equipped with its artificial intelligence (AI) platform called "DeepThinQ."

“I have used LG ThinQ TV myself and am very much satisfied with it,” said Cho. “Televisions will be more than searching content and being connected to other home appliances. We will make AI TVs that evolve themselves based on their self-learning capabilities and cater to customers’ needs.”

The vice chairman also hinted at changes in the company’s smartphone business. “We will no longer set a regular timeline to launch new smartphones from this year,” he said. Usually, LG Electronics has unveiled the G and V series in the first half of every year. According to him, LG might introduce other premium models other than the G and V series this year, or release an “extra premium model” that is even more expensive when it is needed.

Cho also talked about the company’s robot business, its future growth engine. He said LG would develop its robot business as a “cash cow” business in two or three years. LG Electronics unveiled its guide robot and cleaning robot at the 2017 CES and three more models at this year’s event.
