The preorder volume of the Kona, Hyundai Motor’s first subcompact sport utility vehicle, has surpassed the mark of 5,000.

On Monday, Hyundai announced that the sales of the Kona will begin in earnest starting Tuesday across the country. The South Korean automaker giant launched the Kona’s preorder on June 14 and said it had received a total of 5,012 orders. The figure is much higher than the number of preorder for the Tivoli, its competitor from Ssangyong Motor, which hovered around 4,000, as well as the Tivoli’s monthly average sales at 3,750. Hyundai’s annual sales target for the Kona was initially 26,000. Considering the period and volume of preorders, the automaker has already achieved 20 percent of its goal.

The lower-center design of Hyundai’s newest subcompact SUV lends itself a stable and rugged image. The Kona features the cascading grille, Hyundai Motor’s signature detail, with a flat-lined daytime running lamp on each flank. Boasting the 1.6 T-GDi gasoline engines, the 1.6 diesel engine, and the basic seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT), the Kona offers superb driving performance as well. The maximum output and torque for gasoline models reach Mach 177 and 27.0kg·m, respectively, with those for their diesel counterparts hovering around Mach 136 and 30.6kg·m.

The combined fuel efficiency of the 2WD turbo models, 4WD models, and the 2WD diesel models, each stands at 12.8 kilometers, 11.3 kilometers, and 16.8 kilometers per liter.

The Smart model is priced at 18.95 million won, with the Modern at 20.95 million won, the Modern Pop, Tech, and Art models at 22.25 million won, and the Premium tier at 24.25 million won. For the Kona Flux, a special version of Tuix, the Flux Modern model is priced at 22.5 million won, Flux Premium and Flux Premium Special at 24.85 million won and 26.80 million won respectively. The prices are all for gasoline models, and an additional 1.95 million won is added for different tiers of diesel counterparts.
