Fleming is having a recital in Seoul Arts Center on July 3, after having a solo recital in Korea in 2002. Along with pianist Hartmut Holl, she will sing operas of Giacomo Puccini and Arrigo Boito as well as songs conposed by Johannes Brahms and Camille Saint Saens. While she is a classical singer, Fleming is also a celebrity popular among American people, having appeared in ads, children's programs and TV shows.
During an email interview with the Dong-A Ilbo, Fleming said, "I've been trying to get closer of people because I want more people to enjoy classical music. When I sang at the Super Bowl, around 100 million people were watching. Some must have listened to vocal music for the first time, and I really hope that I can contribute to more people's visiting to classical concerts."
Fleming has played the heroin role in more than 55 operas. In the opera The Knight of the Rose (Der Rosenkavalier), she played Marshalin more than 70 times.
Fleming has also close times with Korean singers. She went to Juilliard School of Music with sopranos Shin Young-ok, Park Mi-hye and Hong Hye-kyung. Soprano Jo Su-mi was on stage at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with Fleming as the world's top three sopranos.
"It was a valuable experience to be with Shin Young-ok at the Juliard Music of School," Fleming said. "I recently had a master class with Korean students, too. I'm always impressed by the talent of Korean singers."
