Want to enjoy delightful songs with heartfelt story? Then the musical “Dream Girls” would be the perfect choice. Previously released as a movie with the same title in 2007, Dream Girls is currently open in Korea, with original cast members.

The musical portrays conflicts, wounds, and reconciliation of three African American girls Effie, Deena, and Lorrell who realize their dreams of becoming singers. Based on the actual story of the 1960s African American R&B female group “The Supremes,” the musical made its first debut on Broadway in 1981, and grabbed six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Lighting Design. This time, the performance was edited by both Broadway and Korean producers.

Playing as Effie who leaves the group after losing her main vocal microphone and lover, Brie Jackson moves audiences with her ample rich voice and overwhelming high pitch. The sound and energy she blasts is indeed incredible. The two other main leading characters Deena (Candice Woods) and Lorrell (Antoinette Comer) also perfected the performance with outstanding singing and plays. The musical brings out the best of familiar tunes such as “Move,” “One Night Only,” and “Listen.”

Audiences will easily resonate with the characters who once had high hopes of becoming a celebrity, only to find themselves empty and losing their real selves. The musical also portrays the ugly truth of the entertainment business where people fight by fair means or foul to win. Still, audiences will be moved by the touching sisterhood when the once hostile and separated singers reunite. The flamboyant retro costumes shining under various colored lights awe the crowd. All in all, it is a performance satisfying the all the needs which every musical connoisseur hopes for. The musical will be on stage until June 25 at Charlotte Theater, Seoul.
