Three program providers including Channel A have passed the re-approval review made by the government. TV Chosun, which failed to meet requirements, will be subject to the performance review every six months if it violates the conditions for the re-approval. Under the current requirements, the government may cancel its re-approval if the provider makes repeated violations.

The Korea Communications Committee made a resolution to reapprove three program providers including Channel A, JTBC, and TV Chosun during its plenary session held on Friday.

Channel A received 661.91 out of 1,000 points with no fails, and passed the basic point at 650. JTBC scored 731.39 points. TV Chosun did not meet the basic point with 625.13, however. The company will be required to meet higher standards on programs and casts for the upcoming review early next year, and will be given corrective orders once it fails to comply with the standards. Suspension of business will be enforced when it makes repetitive violations on major requirements, and the approval will be canceled after the hearing.

For the first time, the Korea Communications Committee imposed all three providers to meet the re-approval requirement that “every provider shall maintain or reduce the number of legal restrictions from the committee due to false report, rough words, and biased broadcasting every year.” The committee was led by honorary professor Lee Gwang-jae of the Media and Information Department at Kyunghee University, along with 13 expert panels from various sectors including broadcasting, legal, management and accounting, technology, and viewers and consumers.

Under the recent re-approval, Channel A will provide programs for the next three years from April 22, 2017 to April 21, 2020 until the next review is held.
