U.S. House lawmakers have proposed a resolution slamming China’s retaliatory actions against South Korea over the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system on its soil. Rep. Ted Yoho, Republican chairman of the House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, has officially introduced a resolution condemning China’s reprisal attitude to South Korea on Thursday local time for its decision to host U.S. missile shield. “It is unacceptable as China’s behaviors may violate World Trade Organization obligations.”

Though a few lawmakers have released individual statements blaming Beijing’s retaliation against Seoul, there has not been a single resolution from a group of lawmakers yet. This first new resolution, which was introduced by a string of lawmakers, including pro-South Korea Rep. Gerry Connolly, Democrat, is likely to pass the House of Representatives. Republican House member Tom Marino, who was a vice chair of Trump’s transition team, also signed the resolution.

“THAAD will solely be operated for a defense purpose in order to counter North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats. It will not be used to undermine a third country,” the resolution stated. The resolution describes China’s retributive measures as unreasonable and inappropriate. The resolution also includes specific cases of China’s retaliation against South Korea. For example, the Chinese government closed about 50 Lotte Mart stores in China after Lotte Group provided its land in Seongju golf course for the deployment of THAAD, initiated full inspections on South Korean companies operating in China, caused some direct damages on U.S. companies partnered with Lotte Group, imposed a ban on selling tour packages to South Korea and cancelled South Korean cultural or theatrical performances in China.
