Art Basel’s Asia director Adeline Ooi visited Korea several months ahead of the biggest art fair in Asia. The fifth edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong will open on March 21-25 next year.

“This year’s fourth edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong drew as much as 70,000 visitors, which is a testament to increasing reputation of Asian artists in the global art market,” Ooi said at a press conference at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on Wednesday. “This year’s fair will be an opportunity to showcase unique Korean art such as early monochrome paintings and video artworks in the 1970s.”

About 241 galleries from 34 countries, including nine from Korea, will participate in Art Basel in Hong Kong 2017, which will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, Hong Kong. The fair will introduce 29 new galleries this year. Art Basel in Hong Kong will have a new section “Cabinet,” through which curators will bring one and only exhibitions such as solo exhibition or collection of historical relics.

“Cabinet section will unfold the history of Asian art in details, and it will help visitors explore how Asian art developed in the global art community,” Ooi said.
