The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea announced Monday that Mother Teresa (1910-1997, pictured), who was hailed as the Saint of the Poor, will be canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Francis on this coming Sunday.

Mother Teresa was beatified by the then Pope John Paul II in October 2003, six years after she died. The Vatican recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa last year, which involved the healing of a Brazilian man who had suffered severe brain tumors. In Roman Catholic Church, elevation to sainthood requires more than two miracles officially recognized by the church.

Born in Macedonia, Mother Teresa began her life as a nun in Ireland in 1928 and devoted her entire life later on to the poor and underprivileged people in India. In 1979, she became a laurate of Nobel Peace Prize for her unparalleled sense of philanthropy.

The canonization ceremony will be broadcast online at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday (Korean time) on CTV (Vatican Television Center/www.ctv.va).
