Samsung Electronics is partnering with U.S.-based Intel, the world's largest non-memory chip maker, to launch National IoT Strategy Dialogue, as it tries to expand influence in the Internet of Things market. It will also spend 1.2 billion U.S. dollars in the next four years in the U.S. to develop IoT technologies and expand market there.

So said Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman and Co-CEO Kwon Oh-hyun as he spoke at the Internet of Things Policy Dialogue held at the Washington Post building in Washington on Tuesday. The forum was attended by some 300 IoT related lawmakers and industry experts including Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), co-chairs of the Congressional Internet of Things Caucus, and Christian Gerdes, chief innovation officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation.

At the forum, Kwon said "human-centered," "open" and "collaborative" mindset is necessary to bring innovation to the IoT society. He added that while Internet of Things is bringing changes to the lives of individuals, it will have to bring broader effects and innovation to the society overall. He laid out an example where in an aged society when IoT links hospitals and patients together, people will be less able to visit hospitals, which will result in increasing efficiency in the society.

As a head start, Samsung will develop related technologies through the Samsung Strategic Innovation Center and Global Innovation Center, both of which were launched in Silicon Valley in 2013. It also aims to fortify collaboration with Internet of Things startups.

Douglas N. Davis, senior vice president and general manager of the Internet of Things (IoT) Group at Intel, which established National IoT Strategy Dialogue together with Samsung, also said the Dialogue was launched in just the right time when interest in IoT is growing, adding Intel will make efforts to expand IoT's social impact.
