Oxy Reckitt Benckiser (now, RB Korea) will announce a public apology with a detailed compensation plan on Monday, with respect to the allegation that its humidifier sterilizer killed people. According to government statistics, the company has allegedly caused 103 deaths.

Oxy said on Sunday that it would make an announcement about the company’s official stance related to the humidifier sterilizer at Conrad Hotel, Yeouido, Seoul, at 11 a.m. on Monday. The CEO of the company will make the announcement, but it is a belated apology made in five years since the allegation emerged in 2011.

The company had refused to acknowledge its responsibilities, but has decided to make an apology apparently due to prosecutors’ investigation and mounting public criticism.

The head office of Reckitt Benckiser held a confidential board of directors meeting and passed the resolution to apologize on April 29. The board of directors is said to have decided to spend 10 billion won (8.7 million U.S. dollars) including 5 billion won (4.3 million dollars) donated to the Environment Ministry in March 2014 and 5 billion won (4.3 million dollars), which it decided to donate additionally to build a memorial park for the victims. In addition, it is said to have set the compensation level for each victim to at least 400 to 500 million won (351,300 to 439,100 dollars) and reset the compensation amount to victims who have already agreed with the company.
