Samsung Electronics has reportedly invested the largest sum of money in research and development (R&D) in the world. According to the 2018 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard on Wednesday, Samsung Electronics spent more than 13.44 billion euros in 2017, an 11.5 percent increase from the previous year, to become the world’s largest R&D spender.

This is the first time that the South Korean tech giant ranked first in the list since the data was first compiled in 2004. Google’s holding company Alphabet came in second with 13.38 billion euros followed by German automaker Volkswagen with 13.14 billion euros, Microsoft with 12.28 billion euros, and Huawei with 11.33 billion euros.
