The Boston Red Sox has defeated defending champions, the Houston Astros, to advance to the World Series (WS) in five years.

The Red Sox defeated the Astros 4-1 on Thursday (local time) in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) held at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. Winning the best-of-seven series, Boston effectively ended Houston’s hopes of winning back-to-back World Series, and will advance to the World Series for the first time since 2013.

This year gives a chance to Boston to become a team with the most victories (four times) in the league since 2000. Since the turn of the century, Boston (2004, 2007, 2013) and San Francisco (2010, 2012, 2014) have won the World Series three times, respectively.

Luck has been also on Boston’s side. In Wednesday’s game, Astros’ Jose Altuve hit a ball into right field, and as Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts jumped against the wall and stretched to snatch it out of the air, a fan in the stands hit his glove and the ball bounced back onto the field. Umpires ruled Altuve out because of spectator interference, and the decision cost the Houston shortstop a two-run homer in a game the Astros eventually lost 8-6.

The Red Sox could now take some time to plan its strategy for the upcoming World Series, where they will face the National League Championship Series winner. The Los Angeles Dodgers lead the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 in the series, but with Game 6 and 7 scheduled to be held at Milwaukee’s home field Miller Park, it remains to be seen whether Milwaukee’s home field advantage will reverse the trend.
