South Korea moved six places down from last year to be ranked 7th at the 59th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Cluj-Napoca, Romania from July 3 to 14.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said on Friday that the Korean team, which consists of six students from Seoul Science High School, won three gold medals and three silver medals to be placed at 7th with 177 points. As many as six members are allowed to participate in the competition per country. South Korea retained the top spot at last year’s event held in Brazil with all members of the team winning gold medals.

Gold medalists of the team include Kim Da-in (senior), Kim Hong-nyung and Song Seung-ho (sophomores) and silver medalists are Lee Song-un (senior), Kang Ji-won and Cho Young-jun (sophomores). In particular, this is the second gold medal for Kim Da-in, who earned a gold medal in last year’s event by acquiring the highest points among female participants.
