SK Telecom ranked as world’s No. 2 in smart home competitiveness

South Korea’s top three telecom carriers - SK Telecom, KT and LG U+ - all have made the list of the world’s top 10 mobile carriers in an assessment of smart home competiveness. Notably, SK Telecom ranked second after Germany’s Deutsche Telekom.

Ovum, a market analysis company in the United Kingdom, announced on Sunday this outcome after assessing the competiveness in smart home service of the world’s 20 major telecom carriers. Comcast of the United States ranked third, while KT and LG U+ ranked sixth and seventh, respectively.

The assessment analyzed the companies in six categories – strategy; ecosystem; sales strategy; connectivity with artificial intelligence secretary; platform; the size of customers - based on service situations from 2014 to this year’s first quarter submitted by the companies. Deutsche Telekom acquired 22 points, and the runner-up SK Telecom won 21, while KT and LG U+ each received 15 points.

Notably, SK Telecom acquired higher scores in the eco system and strategy categories. The company received high marks for conducting extensive collaboration with related companies, and providing all of the core functions including security, smart energy and IoT.

The three South Korean mobile carriers are continuously increasing IoT devices for homes that are linked with their own AI speakers, including Nugu and Giga Genie. IoT devices for homes that SK Telecom has introduced through collaboration with manufacturers amount to 350 kinds in total. The company is pushing to provide smart home services that allow for control of lighting, heating and power supply at new apartment complexes through alliances with major domestic construction companies.
