Gyeonggi Province announced Tuesday it would add 21 Elderly Recreation Sites to last year’s 19 four-month pilot run sites, which received positive reaction from the elderly without access to cultural activities.

Elderly Recreation Sites are to make the cultural arts such as movies or exhibitions and recreational activities as accessible as taking a stroll. Last year, Gyeonggi Province ran 19 sites in seven cities including Suwon, Yangpyeong, Ansan and Dongducheon, as a part of the “Gyeonggi 9988 Cultural Enjoyment Project” with the purpose of “increasing elderly participation in cultural activities.”

Each local Recreation Site achieved remarkable results. Dongducheon Seniors Welfare Center Recreation Site independently added four additional local sites. Siheung HOPE Health Welfare Social Cooperative Elderly Recreation Site’s programs, such as pain clinic “Goodbye Pain” and fitness dance “Cha-cha All Together,” were so popular that variety of clubs were formed.

Gyeonggi Province will be selecting operating organizations by inviting public participation of welfare, culture and education related entities and non-profit organizations in February. Responsibilities will include showing movies, art, and photography, offering free practice space for clubs, and running customized culture and leisure programs.
