A consortium project “Light Walk” by French architect Dominique Perrault and Junglim Architecture has been selected for the underground Yeongdong-daero transit terminal project, the Seoul Metropolitan Government said Monday. Earlier in June, the city government announced that on Yeongdong-daero located in the middle of Gangnam, the most affluent district in the Korean capital, it would construct a mega-transit underground complex that holds five lines including two subway lines (Line 2 and 9), GTX and KTX, and a park that is 1.5 times greater than the Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul. A highlight of Perrault’s design is a 10-meter-wide (east to west) and 560-meter-long (south to north) light beam, which will capture, collect and illuminate the underground space. The intended effect is to expand the sunlight to underground. Dominique Perrault designed the Ewha Campus Center, a landmark of Ewha Womans University in Seoul. Above the underground complex will be grassland between Samsung Station on Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, covering 30,000 square meters: streets and bus stops will be built on the semi-basement level; commercial (60 percent) and public (40 percent) facilities on the first and the second basement levels; a parking lot that can accommodate 209 cars on the third basement level; subway, GTX and KTX stations on the fourth basement level; LRT Wirye-Sinsa Line’s work facilities on the fifth basement level; Wirye-Sinsa Line on the sixth basement level.
The Seoul city government project 630,000 passengers (450,000 using railway and 180,000 using buses) will use this complex every day. The design will be completed by early 2019 and construction by 2023.
