Hawaii is the first of 50 U.S. states to prepare the public for the possibility of a ballistic missile strike from North Korea starting in December. It is a drill to evacuate residents within 10 to 12 minutes of an attack-warning siren that the state hasn’t heard since the end of the Cold War in 1991.

“From the first week of December, Hawaii will begin monthly drills to prepare for the evacuation, electromagnetic effects and radioactive fallout caused by North Korea’s nuclear missile attack,” said Hawaii Emergency Management Agency Executive Director Toby Clairmont in a VOA interview Wednesday (local time). This drill will also be held in Guam.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, it takes 20 minutes for a North Korean missile to reach Hawaii, while it takes about five minutes for the U.S Pacific Command to announce that the missile is heading for Hawaii and takes another five minutes for the state’s Emergency Management Agency to inform the residents.
