President Moon Jae-in attended a memorial ceremony marking the 8th anniversary of the death of the late President Kim Dae-jung held at Seoul National Cemetery on Friday and reaffirmed his willingness to inherit the Sunshine Policy, the North Korea policy under former President Kim. The president’s commitment to the Sunshine policy is an extension of his vision to address North Korea’s nuclear problem based on dialogue amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula due to growing North Korea’s provocations.

President Moon said, “It was the late President Kim who led the victory at two battles in the Yeonpyeong area and peace on the Korean Peninsula with no armed conflict between the North and South till the Participatory Government.” He emphasized peaceful approach towards North Korea as well as willingness to take resolute actions on its provocations by citing battles of Yeonpyeong.

“I firmly believe that North and South Korea will meet again and the door of hope will be opened along with the road that the former president charted in the history of Korean Peninsula no matter how tough things get," said the president. The presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said that the reason why the president commented on “no armed conflict” was to stress that North Korea problem should be solved based on peace and dialogue, not through military actions. President Moon also said that he can guarantee that there will be no more wars on the Korean Peninsula at a press conference held on the previous day to commemorate the 100th day after his inauguration.
