Samsung Electronics has become the world’s No. 1 manufacturer in all of its business divisions including television, mobile device, appliances and semiconductor and set a new record, both domestically and internationally, among electronics manufacturers.

According to the industry sources on Friday, Samsung Electronics emerged as a top semiconductor manufacturer in the second quarter, beating Intel that dominated the semiconductor market for 24 years. According to Intel’s second-quarter earnings report, which was released on Thursday after closing of the New York stock market, the company recorded 3.8 billion dollars of operating profits on revenue of 14.8 billion dollars.

Samsung Electronics ranked first in the global television market in 2006, surpassing Sony that had never surrendered its crown for 36 years. Samsung Electronics has maintained its top position for 12 years since 2006. Since Samsung Electronics emerged as the world’s largest mobile phone company in 2012 by overtaking Nokia, it has held the top spot amid a challenging landscape in the wake of smartphones.

“No other electronics manufacturer has become the world’s largest company in two different segments as Samsung Electronics did. The company manufactures and sells parts to competitors while selling its complete products in a separate market,” said Lee Byung-tae, a professor at KAIST Business School. "Contributing factors to Samsung Electronics’ unique success would be a diverse product portfolio and the vertically-integrated subsidiary structure."
